Buckhorn High School Wrestling ("Buckhorn Wrestling," "we," "us," or "our") is committed to ensuring that our website, buckhornwrestling.com, is accessible to all visitors, including individuals with disabilities. We believe that every parent, student-athlete, fan, and community member should be able to access our content and interact with our site regardless of ability.
1. Conformance Status
We aim to conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 Level AA standard, published by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). WCAG 2.2 AA is the internationally recognized standard for web accessibility and addresses the needs of users with a wide range of disabilities, including visual, auditory, physical, speech, cognitive, language, learning, and neurological disabilities.
Our current conformance status is partially conformant. "Partially conformant" means that some portions of the content may not yet fully conform to the standard. We are actively working to achieve full conformance and continuously improve the accessibility of our Site.
2. Accessibility Features
We have implemented the following accessibility features throughout our website:
2.1 Semantic HTML
Our site is built with proper semantic HTML5 elements, including <header>, <nav>, <main>, <section>, <article>, <aside>, and <footer>. This structure helps assistive technologies such as screen readers correctly interpret and navigate the content. All pages include proper heading hierarchy (h1 through h4) to ensure logical content flow.
2.2 Keyboard Navigation
All interactive elements on our site are fully operable using a keyboard alone. This includes navigation links, form fields, buttons, the theme toggle, FAQ accordions, the floating chat panel, and the accessibility options dialog. Users can navigate through the site using the Tab key, activate elements with Enter or Space, and close dialogs with Escape.
2.3 Skip Navigation Link
Every page includes a "Skip to main content" link as the first focusable element. This allows keyboard and screen reader users to bypass the navigation menu and jump directly to the main page content, reducing unnecessary tabbing through repeated navigation links.
2.4 Focus Indicators
All focusable elements display a visible focus indicator (a 3-pixel gold outline) when navigated to via keyboard. This ensures that keyboard users can always see which element currently has focus. Focus indicators meet or exceed WCAG 2.2 requirements for focus appearance (Success Criterion 2.4.13).
2.5 Color Contrast
We have designed our color scheme to meet WCAG 2.2 AA minimum contrast requirements. Our primary text colors achieve a contrast ratio of at least 4.5:1 against their backgrounds for normal text and at least 3:1 for large text. Our high contrast mode (see Section 2.8) further increases contrast for users who need it.
2.6 Responsive Design
Our website is fully responsive and adapts to all screen sizes, from mobile phones to large desktop monitors. Content reflows without horizontal scrolling at up to 400% zoom (WCAG 2.2 Success Criterion 1.4.10). All touch targets meet the minimum 44x44 pixel size requirement for mobile accessibility.
2.7 Reduced Motion
Our site respects the prefers-reduced-motion operating system setting. When this preference is detected, all CSS animations and transitions are minimized. Additionally, users can manually enable reduced motion through our accessibility options panel, which disables all animations and transitions across the site.
2.8 High Contrast Toggle
Our accessibility options panel includes a high contrast mode that increases the visual contrast of all page elements. When enabled, the site switches to a dark background with high-contrast text colors, making content easier to read for users with low vision or light sensitivity. This preference is saved to local storage so it persists across visits.
2.9 Text Sizing
Users can adjust the base font size of the site through our accessibility options panel, choosing from Small (14px), Default (16px), Large (18px), or X-Large (20px). All text on the site scales proportionally using relative units, ensuring layouts remain functional at larger text sizes. This preference is saved to local storage.
2.10 Reading Guide
Our accessibility options panel includes a reading guide feature that displays a horizontal highlight band that follows the user's cursor. This helps users with reading difficulties or attention disorders maintain their place while reading content on the page.
2.11 Link Highlighting
Our accessibility options panel includes a link highlighting feature that adds a visible background and outline to all links on the page. This makes links easier to identify for users who may have difficulty distinguishing links from surrounding text based on color alone.
3. Additional Measures
In addition to the features listed above, we have taken the following measures to ensure accessibility:
- All images include descriptive
altattributes. Decorative images use emptyalt=""attributes to be ignored by screen readers. - All form inputs include associated
<label>elements and appropriatearia-requiredattributes for required fields. - Interactive components such as the mobile menu, FAQ accordion, chat panel, and accessibility dialog use appropriate ARIA attributes (
aria-expanded,aria-hidden,aria-controls,aria-label,role) to convey their state to assistive technologies. - The accessibility options dialog uses the native HTML
<dialog>element with proper focus trapping and Escape key handling. - A live region (
aria-live="polite") announces accessibility setting changes to screen reader users. - The site supports forced colors mode (Windows High Contrast) with appropriate fallback styles.
- A print stylesheet removes navigation, footer, and interactive elements for clean printed output.
- The site includes structured data (Schema.org) for assistive technology and search engine accessibility.
4. Known Limitations
Despite our best efforts, some content on our site may not yet be fully accessible. Known limitations include:
- Third-Party Embeds: Embedded content from third-party services (Google Maps, Calendly, YouTube) may not fully conform to WCAG 2.2 AA. We provide text alternatives where possible (such as the physical address alongside the map) but cannot guarantee the accessibility of third-party widgets.
- PDF Documents: Some downloadable documents (such as forms or schedules) may be provided as PDFs that are not fully accessible. We are working to provide accessible alternatives. Contact us if you need information from a document in an alternative format.
- User-Uploaded Content: Photos in the gallery may not always have fully descriptive alt text. We are working to improve image descriptions over time.
- Older Browsers: Some accessibility features (such as the native
<dialog>element) may not work in older browsers. We recommend using the latest version of your preferred browser for the best experience.
5. Feedback

7. Legal Compliance
7.1 Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) — Title III
While the ADA does not explicitly reference websites, courts and the Department of Justice have increasingly interpreted Title III of the ADA (which prohibits discrimination in places of public accommodation) to apply to websites. As a public high school athletic program, we are committed to ensuring that our digital presence is accessible in alignment with the spirit and intent of the ADA. We use the WCAG 2.2 AA standard as our benchmark for ADA web accessibility compliance.
7.2 Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act
Section 508 requires that electronic and information technology developed, procured, maintained, or used by federal agencies be accessible to people with disabilities. While Buckhorn Wrestling is not a federal agency, as part of a public school system that may receive federal funding, we strive to meet Section 508 requirements. The current Section 508 standards incorporate WCAG 2.0 Level AA by reference, and our goal of WCAG 2.2 AA conformance exceeds this standard.
7.3 Alabama State Law
As part of the public school system in the State of Alabama, we comply with all applicable state laws regarding accessibility and non-discrimination in public services and education.
8. Assessment and Remediation
We assess the accessibility of our website through the following methods:
- Self-evaluation using automated accessibility testing tools
- Manual keyboard navigation testing
- Screen reader testing with NVDA and VoiceOver
- Color contrast verification using recognized contrast checking tools
- Review of user feedback and reported issues
When accessibility issues are identified, we prioritize them based on their impact on users and work to remediate them as quickly as resources allow.
9. Formal Complaints
If you are not satisfied with our response to your accessibility feedback, you may file a complaint with:
